Saturday 9 - It Must Be Him

It Must Be Him

Saturday 9: It Must Be Him (1967)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This song is about a woman waiting impatiently for a phone call. Do you consider yourself patient?

It depends on the situation.  Sometimes I am able to be more patient than others.  But, to be real honest, I am not the patient person I would like to be.

2) Other women (most notably Shirley Bassey and Dottie West) have recorded this song. Harry James and Doc Severinson did instrumental versions. But there's no record of a male singing "Oh dear God! It must be her! Or I shall die!" Do you think that's because waiting for the phone to ring is more "a chick thing," and men simply don't do it?

Yes, I do think it is more a chick thing.

This is a picture of me from my college yearbook 1963.

3) This recording enjoyed a sudden surge of popularity after 20 years when it was included on the soundtrack of Moonstruck, the 1987 film that won Cher an Oscar. Have you seen Moonstruck?

If I did it wasn't memorable.

4) This week's featured artist, Vikki Carr, was born in El Paso, TX. El Paso can proudly proclaim itself one of America's safest cities. What can your hometown be proud of?

Sadly, there is not a lot of
good going on in my city right now.  We have casinos draining the local economy, and a very high crime rate, not to mention corruption in high places.  However, we are a very pretty city right on the Red River, with beautiful older homes and churches on tree-lined streets.  We have the wonderful Norton's Art Gallery and Gardens and an amazing symphony.  But, we can be most proud of the people.  We are a very divergent community of some of the nicest people you will ever meet.

5) She was a staple on Jerry Lewis' Labor Day Telethon, raising funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association by performing this song. Is your TV on right now? If so, what are you watching?

No, it is now 1:45 a.m. and I am listening to Vikki Carr music on YouTube as I type.

6) In 1971, Vikki fulfilled a dream of hers by establishing the Vikki Carr Scholarship Foundation. Every year the foundation awards Hispanic American students money to use toward higher education. She says it's her way of returning "the support and encouragement she received from others" early in her career. If you could establish a charitable foundation, what cause would you like it to benefit?

I would like to form a charitable foundation that would help children of families who pastor small churches to attend the college of their choice.  Being the daughter of a "country" preacher myself, I know that these families don't always have the funds to pay for college.  I would also want to provide a foundation that would help the widows of these pastors.

7)  In 1967, when this song was popular, Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed the first heart transplant. Today, one of the most common surgeries performed in the United States is the coronary artery bypass surgery. Have you had any surgeries?

Oh heavens yes, but you don't want to go into all that.  I will say that my husband has had a triple bypass and we are most grateful for the health breakthrough by Dr. Christiaan Barnard in 1967.

8)  Also in 1967, the RMS Queen Mary was retired after 31 years of service. Have you ever traveled by cruise ship?

We have taken two cruises - Caribbean and Alaska.

9) Random question: Who is your oldest living relative?

That would be a 1st cousin who is in his late 80's.

This picture of cousins was taken in 1951 and Norman is the only guy in the group.  I am in the middle of the group on the 1st step with our much loved grandmother.  Notice my sister and I are wearing matching dresses that our mother made.

There aren't many of us 1st cousins left of the original 10 siblings.

  1. You should really look for Moonstruck on Netflix. Such a good movie... at least those of us with Italians in the family enjoyed it. I've watched it at least a dozen times. Enjoyed your answers!
