Turning Green on the Hodgepodge

Happy St. Paddy's Day to you!

Joining Joyce at From This Side of the Pond for this week's questions.

1. This week's Hodgepodge lands on St. Patrick's Day. Will you wear green? Eat corned beef and cabbage? Drink green beer? Have you ever been to Ireland? Is it on your travel 'bucket list'?

No to all of the above

2. Something you think is 'worth its weight in gold'?

My secretary is one of my favorite pieces of furniture because not only is it pretty, it is extremely functional.  It displays some of my treasures, it is currently my desk, and it provides tons of storage.

3. Something that makes you 'green around the gills'?

There isn't much that makes me nauseous.  However, the current national affairs do make me pretty sick to my stomach.

4. What puts a 'spring in your step' these days?

The anticipation of being able to create a lovely outdoor oasis in our yard.

5. Write a limerick using one of the following as your theme....March, St. Patrick's Day, Covid, 2020 and/or 2021, the color green, or life lately. Yes, you can do it.

Marching through March has been in a line

of Bible study, meals with family & friends which was mighty fine.

Doctors visits and road trips

and eating at home saved us tons of dollars on tips.

The end of the month will bring lots of reasons to not whine.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

We have been doing a lot of walking in our neighborhood and as a result have met some of the most interesting people.  I'm thinking it may deserve it's own blog post.

The Week with Q&A's

Life for us old folks really isn't exciting enough to blog about; however, it's my life and my blog, so I can get away with it.

Therefore, I will show you a couple more headshots of Ava Grace.

Dick has completed all the tests for the cardiologist and they all came out good except for the one that showed not enough blood flow to the heart.  Not good!  He will have a heart cath this Wednesday to see what's going on.  So, that's the biggie for this week.

Last week involved regular routine stuff plus a 3-hour trip back to our former place of residence.  Our CPA is there and so are some good friends who we met for lunch and caught up while dominating a table in a busy restaurant for a couple hours.

Saturday morning while Dick was enjoying time with his buddies, I decided to explore the nature preserve just down the street from us.

On one of the interesting paths I came upon this lookout tower.

Once I found the right path, I was able to walk out on the bridge and see the expanse of a portion of the 200 acres in this preserve.

I did manage to get in 2 1/2 miles and can't wait for all the trees to fully bud out, because it will be an amazing place to spend some time.

Sunday after lunch at church, we made the rounds of a few local nurseries to whet our appetite for making plant purchases in a few weeks.  First, we have to get someone over here who actually owns a shovel - or a tiller and knows what to do.

Since this is as exciting as it got around here, I thought I would link up with Bev Sykes, who asks the questions on Sunday Stealing.  She may provide a bit more fun than I did.

1 Do You Sleep With Your Closet Doors Open Or Closed?

Because the heat vents do overtime in the closet, we choose to keep the sauna doors open at night.  Besides who knows when we might decide to use it.

2 Do You Have Freckles?

No freckles but age has decided to give me marks.

3 Can You Whistle?

Oh yes.  I just have to not do it when D has his hearing aids in.

4 Last Song You Listened To.

Something unrememberable in the car while riding around our new city.

5 Name Something That Relaxes You.

Walking

6 What Sounds Are Your Favourite?

The sounds that come from my sweet family.

7 What Do You Wear To Bed?

What season are we talking about here?  It tends to get lighter as it gets warmer.

8 Do You Sing In The Shower?
No, but I do purr in the jetted tube.

9 What Books Are You Reading?

I'm still working my way through Coniston that I mentioned in my last post.

Found this one this afternoon in the HOA Library that sounds compelling.

10 Do You Believe In Magic?

I felt magic 56 years ago this past February 6, when I met a certain young man.  So yes, I do!

11 Can You Curl Your Tongue?

Sure, but controlling it is another thing.

12 Have You Ever Caught A Butterfly?

Yes, a favorite childhood game, but we always released them.

13 Name One Movie That Made You Cry.

I couldn't tell you, but "Sleepless in Seattle" makes me happy.

14 Peanuts Or Sunflower Seeds?

Definitely peanuts and this is the only way to eat them.

15 Are You A Heavy Sleeper?

Soap Box Hodgepodge

Joyce asks the questions and we answer.  Hop over to

1. March 9th is National Get Over It Day...what's something you need to 'just get over already'?

Oh there are several things that are out of my control that I need to release.  One of those is the "counter culture" goobligop.  And yet, see #3.

2. Something you're currently 'over the moon' about?

All 900+ of my granddaughter's new headshots.  There is no way to pick just one favorite or even the top ten because they were all amazing.  But this is the one I'm going to go with for this purpose.

Is she not the prettiest thing?

3. What's something you're 'chewing over' these days? (meaning-thinking over carefully)

Warning!  Sermon time

I read an article this morning about three men who are now considered comprising a "family," being given custody of two babies.  They were conceived through an egg donor and two surrogate mothers.  The CNN article called them "one extraordinary household."  And this my friend will become the norm, where polyamory is normal and any kind of "family" should create and raise children in any way they wish.  Parents are also encouraged to allow schools to subjugate their authority over their children.  Why?  Because we aren't equipped to make those important decisions.  And after all, children have the right to make decisions regarding their own best interests.

God's Word instructs us repeatedly to overcome evil with good; however, there is so much evil in our society and around the world.  What is good is called evil and evil is called good.  The new culture denies there is truth, and instead tolerance has become our highest cultural value.  Yet, those who declare truth, are not tolerated.

As Christian believers, what are we supposed to do?  God's Word doesn't give us a choice.  We need to stand in the gap as examples and not yield to this 21st Century brand of morality.  We must point out evil when we are confronted with it, while also living holy and Christ-like lives ourselves.

During the darkest hours of World War II for Great Britain, Prime Minister Winston Churchill addressed his alma mater Harrow School with one of the most famous quotes:

“Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in, except to convictions of honor and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.”

These powerful words should also encourage and embolden us as it did the Brits to stand strong and firm on our convictions and what we know to be truth. Evil never changes, it just finds more ways.

4. The last thing you cooked or ate that was overdone?

I overcooked meat patties for brunch last week.

5. In celebration of hitting volume 411 in the weekly Hodgepodge, give us the 411 on something happening in your life in the next 30 days.

The end of the month I will be going to spend a few days with my sisters.  Instead of the regular three hours, it will now be a six hour drive, but I am looking so forward to having time with them.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Besides living with integrity, consistency and compassion for others, we are called to pray and work for the spiritual awakening that will change hearts and minds.

How to Spend Time

We are getting settled in and trying to figure out how best to spend our time.

Moving to a new city involves making so many decisions, primarily regarding doctors.

The past two weeks have been full of new doctor visits and getting established with those you feel will best meet your needs.  Dick is currently going through a battery of tests with the cardiologist in order to get a baseline.  So far, we think we've been referred to some good ones that we will stay with.  Thankfully, we live about a mile from the big hospital where all of them have offices.  Still have the eyes and teeth to go.

If we hadn't already known where we would attend church, that would have been another big decision.

Our weekly routine there involves my women's Bible Study every other Monday morning. Dick has Senior Adult Choir every Monday morning and men's Bible Study at 6:30 p.m with men from our Sunday Life Group.  He also has a Saturday morning breakfast with these same men.  We attend a Wednesday afternoon Life Group and it looks like Dick will be doing some teaching there in the future.  He attends a church-wide men's Prayer Group every Friday morning and we go to the gym at 6 a.m. five days a week.

This past Wednesday, we went with a group of other senior adults from the Wednesday group for a tour of Southwestern Seminary. We had never been there and found it to be a beautiful campus with interesting architecture.

We are in the very back under the red lines.

One of the most interesting things we did was to visit the exhibit on the life of Lottie Moon.

If you grew up in a Southern Baptist Church, then you will know who Lottie Moon is.  For those of you who didn't, she was an early missionary who served until her death, in the remote regions of China.  She literally died of starvation because she gave her food to the homeless and starving while also sharing Christ with them.  This wonderful exhibit will be a living testimony to this amazing, Christian woman.

Another decision we get to make is what to do when we don't have anything else to do.

This past Saturday morning, after Dick's breakfast, we decided to go to some Dallas estate sales.  This gives us an opportunity to see parts of the city that we might not ever get to see and houses we would never be in otherwise.

At the first house, I found this lovely plate.

It is named "Lacy" and is beautifully crafted with a fascinating history.

The Sensitive Art of Chokin has been handed down from generation to generation for more than 700 years.  The design is created by etching solid copper and gilding it with gold and silver.

During the late 12th Century, Japanese Chokin artists used this art to decorate the armor, weapons and other military supplies of the notable samurai.  They also decorated shrines using this method.

Since it is a traditional Japanese art form, Chokin art always depicts images considered native to the Japanese culture.

Although this art is used on many types of items, plates hold the most collectible status.

Although this one has all the markings and history and is in pristine condition, I did not have to pay an arm  and a leg for it, thankfully.

And, it is pretty in my house.  The house where I found it, has been sold and is being gutted and completely rebuilt.  We have learned that is the story behind many of the estate sales we've been to.  The land is more valuable than the house, and although many of these houses sale for a million or more, the land is worth more.

At another gorgeous home, the story was a bit different.  The owner who is a prolific and amazing artist, is going into a retirement home.  She was selling almost everything including many of her original and framed paintings as well as many canvases that she used in her art classes.  I wish I had the room and the money for some of these.

Just so you know, I did not purchase the Chinese Altar Bowl above.

Instead, we bought books and a pair of garden clippers.  Yep, if you read my Hodgepodge blog, you know we were in the market for some.

This delightful little book, published in 1958 contains many of the classic poems that we studied in college that have stood the test of times and remain true classics.  As the Editor wrote, "It is the purpose of this little volume to enrich, ennoble, encourage."  Dick reads one or two of the poems to me every morning.

The Winston Churchill who wrote this book, was an American best-selling novelist of the early 20th century and not his British political counterpart of the same era and name.  Actually, this Winston Churchill was in the beginning the more popular author of the two and to keep from being confusing, it was agreed the British Winston would use his sur name, Spencer, thus he became Winston S. Churchill.

This Churchill has a very fascinating history that can be found HERE.  This book, Coniston was not one of his earlier and more well known ones; however, I am finding it so fun to read.  I love the word usage and speech.

I also bought a book of Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings as she is one of my favorite artists.

Amazing that we got out of there without spending more than we did.

This was my view after leaving the fitness center at the church this morning.  The sun was just coming over the horizon and highlighted the cross.

And may He be reflected in my life that I may be an example of His grace.

Wednesday Hodgepodge

Our governor declared today that all businesses will be open 100% and he removed the mask mandate.

I love living in Texas!

Come join Joyce and others for this week's Hodgepodge

1. Is March coming in like a lion where you live? Aslan, Simba, Elsa, The Cowardly Lion...your favorite 'famous' lion?

March has come in with rain, gloriously sunny days and cool nights, so I'm not sure which lion personality that fits.  As for my favorite, it would definitely be Aslan.

2. In what way do you 'march to the beat of your own drum'?

I learned from my mother that it is okay to say "No!"  Because of that, I am liberated to do only those things - activities, projects, etc. - that I feel led to do or want to do.  My arm really isn't easily twisted.

Another way I march to the beat of my own drum, is that I do not feel compelled to be with people unless I so choose.

3. What item that you don't have already, would you most like to own? Any chance of that happening soon?

You know, my wants have been so simplified that this is actually a difficult question to answer.  Not thinking we would be doing any yard work, we gave away all our tools, so a shovel and clippers would be nice.  And yes, that could happen.

4. March is National Flour Month...are you a baker? Cookies-cakes-or pies...your favorite sweet treat to bake? What's the last non-sweet thing you made that called for flour?

No, I am not a baker and never make cookies or pies.  Lea @CiCi's Corner shared a cake recipe recently that I have actually made twice in the last week.  It is easy (a major criteria) and delicious.  Thank you Lea!

I made a sauce recently to use over salmon and I used a tiny bit of flour.  We try very hard to stay away from the three whites - flour, rice and sugar.

 5. There are 31 days in the month of March...where were you and what were you doing when you were 31? If you haven't hit that milestone yet, then tell us where you were and what you were doing 31 months ago? (if math is not your thing, that would be August 3, 2018)

That would have been 1975 and at one point during that year I would have been in Egypt loving on this cute little boy with a donkey and enjoying all the sights and sounds of a Holy Land trip.

We lived in Bastrop, Louisiana and our children would have been aged 6 and 4. I was a very busy mom and wife and as my husband was the Minister of Music at our church, was very involved there as well.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Just down the street from us is a beautiful nature preserve.  We had not been there, so this past Sunday, between rain showers, we decided to go take a look.

It is hard to believe that right in the middle of the busy metroplex, there are acres of natural, untouched land.  Untouched may be a stretch because there are some paved walkways and paths.  It is a very popular place for walkers, runners and bikers.  Right now, it looks pretty drab, but I can't wait to witness the changes spring will bring.

There is even a beautiful spring running through and the recent heavy rains had it actually flowing.  It may look different come summer time.  Regardless, we are so blessed to live near such a special area in the midst of the constant hub bub of a large city.

A new friend who knows all about growing flowers in Texas, came by today to give me some ideas and suggestions for our little front flower bed.  I can't wait to begin transforming that space and making it pretty for us and our neighbors to enjoy.

May you have a great rest of your week and I look forward to seeing you back here next week.
