What I Wore to the Symphony

One of the many things Hubby and I enjoy about living in the 3rd largest city in the state of Louisiana is being able to hear the Shreveport Symphony.
We decided several years ago that we would take advantage of as many cultural events in our area as possible and there are many, with access to three colleges, numerous play venues, Opera Guild, and various musical groups as well as many churches who do amazing musical performances.

Our favorite though is having season tickets to the Shreveport Symphony.  It is one of the best symphonies in the country with notable director, Michael Butterman.

Last night's performance highlighted Liadov's beautiful "The Enchanted Lake", a Bartok Concerto for Orchestra and a Dvorak Cello Concerto featuring an outstanding young Shreveport native, John-Henry Crawford as soloist.

John-Henry, though only 21 years old, has already made quite a name for himself around the world as an amazing cellist.  It was a thrill to hear him perform one of these best-loved masterpieces.

So, what did I wear to the symphony?

In the south, you will see a wide variety of clothing worn to these events.  The youngest may wear blue jeans and tee shirts or long, lovely dresses.  The middle aged will wear anything from nice dress pants to expensive suits.  The older crowd may be bedecked in their sequins and furs.

That's the beauty of living in the south.  Hospitality reigns and everyone is accepted.

Because I am still limited in my selection of shoes, I am not wearing dresses yet.

I chose a pair of black dress pants paired with a black round-neck sweater.  This combination is so basic and can be worn with just about anything to dress it up or down.

The weather was cool and dry so I selected a purple suede jacket that offered warmth and yet was not too heavy.
I wore a very simple gold choker necklace with a black drop and small black stone/diamond earrings.
I kept the look near my face down-stated, yet complimentary to my coloring because of the attention drawn to the waist of the jacket.
I also love the detail on the back of this jacket.
Suede is not the most practical material, however for those of us who live in the south, it can be a nice compliment during the winter and fall months when it isn't raining.

I love the shade of this purple which compliments my yellow skin tone.

Now, what would you wear to the symphony in your city?

Beauty Without Within Thursday

There are so many beautiful things about this lady, that I really am not sure where to begin.

Margaret Williams Jones
Margaret was one of the first people we met when we moved into Twelve Oaks, our gated community in 2007.  Of course, her name and reputation had preceded our meeting her.

Let me back up and tell you some very interesting things about her, and you will understand why we knew her before we knew her.

From a very early age, Margaret loved music and it became a very important part of her life.  Perhaps the greatest contribution to her early musical training and experiences came as a member of the Youth Choir at First Baptist Church, Shreveport, Louisiana.  As a member of this prestigious group, she was given the opportunity to participate in choir tours in the states and abroad.

After graduating from Byrd High School, she attended Centenary College, also in Shreveport, where she studied music.  It was during her time there, at the age of 19 that she won the Regional Metropolitan Opera auditions.  This meant a frightening two-week stay in New York City for this small city girl.

During these two weeks, she competed with 22 other regional winners, and was selected to be in the National Top Ten.  These 10 finalists then had the wonderful opportunity to compete on stage in the Metropolitan Opera.

Margaret told me a funny story, which is about the only way she knows to tell a story.
She said no one told them what to expect when they stepped out on stage, so when it was her turn she walked out and only saw a silent black wall.  She said, she wanted to holler out, "Is there anyone out there?"  But, she decided that might not make the best impression, so decided if her accompanist could play for a big black wall, she could certainly sing to one, and she did.  Afterward, the applause let her know that it wasn't a black wall after all.

She didn't win the competition, but did receive a $1,000 scholarship and the life-long honor of being a Metropolitan Opera Finalist.

By the way, she came home and married her sweetheart since age 15 and used the scholarship money to buy her first piano.

As a result of the honor of being a Met finalist, she was invited to sing all over the country in various venues.  She has sung with the Mississippi and New Orleans Symphonies.  And has performed numerous times with the exceptional Shreveport Symphony.  For nine years she was principle soloist with this symphony for the huge Fourth of July celebration on the River Front.

A concert with Larnell Harris and Wayne Watson
The following are only a few of her accomplishments:
Sang with the Billy Graham #2 Team in North Carolina, singing with Norma Zimmer
Symphony Guest Soloist
Many Church Concerts all over the United States
 Member of the Symphony Guild
Member of PEO
Daughter's of Confederacy
Voice Teacher
Soloist for 20 years with "Phantom of the Organ," a summer production performed in various US cities,  where she sings major works from Operas such as
Les Miserable, Cats, and Phantom of the Opera.  This will be held in Houston this weekend.

Margaret was Director of the Children's Music Program and Artist in Residence at the First Methodist Church in Shreveport for 15 years.  During those years, she had the opportunity to tour and sing in Europe and Asia.  Currently, she is Artist in Residence at the Noel Methodist Church.

Perhaps one of the most exciting accomplishments was her debut in 2010 at Carnegie Hall as featured soloist.  We were all thrilled for her as we discussed the gown and shoes she would wear, and how she would wear her hair, and all that girly stuff before a big event.
Needless to say, she did an outstanding job and we her friends could not be more proud of her.

I asked Margaret to what she attributes her success and her immediate response was:
"It is just a God-given talent.  I haven't had to work for it, and it has never been a drudgery.  I have enjoyed singing and being with people all over the world.  And I sing for my God."
One might expect Margaret to be a "Diva" with all her accomplishments, but she is anything but.  She is humble, down-to-earth, and perhaps the most friendly person you will ever meet.  Yet, she is so grateful for every opportunity to share her God-given talent with others.  One of her main desires is to treat her friends as she would want to be treated - to be loved and liked by others.

An example of this is the fact that no event is beneath her.  A few years ago she was invited to sing at an outdoor Tea Party Rally.  It was in mid August and over 100 degrees.  But we went and she sang her sweltering heart out.

She describes herself as fun-loving, compassionate, religious, out-going and humorous.

Truly, she is one of the funniest people to be around.  Mutual friends would laugh and say, "If you are having a party, you want to hire Margaret."  She keeps us in stitches as she tells some of her experiences.

My favorite is the time she was to sing following a baptism in a large church.  Unfortunately, the person being baptized was a very large person, and water from the baptistry, which was behind and above the choir, began to spill out over the protective wall, soaking the choir members in the back row.  I wish you could hear her describe how she tried to sing while the choir was soaking wet and the congregation was laughing.

Margaret and Rick were married in 1972 and have one daughter, Heather and two grandchildren, Sydney Renee who is 10 and Luke Alexander, 8.  Heather and husband Mark live in Mansfield, Texas.  Truly, Margaret's family and her faith are the most important things to her.
A recent trip to Italy with her sister and BIL
She told me that the older she gets, the more she wants to invest in her young voice students the love for and enjoyment of music.  These are some fortunate children.

You will love seeing her and hearing her sing, "We Shall Behold Him."

Margaret Williams Jones is a blessing and I am honored to call her my friend.

She is truly Beautiful Without and Within!

Weekend Happenings

FALL IS IN THE AIR!
When you live in the south and have endured months without rain or temperatures below 97 degrees, or humidly below 90%, then any sign of Fall is a most welcome event and one to be celebrated.
This past Friday brought us at least four inches of the most refreshing rain.  Thank you Lord!

So, this is how Hubby and I took advantage of the weekend together.

Saturday Morning
Judy, my good, good friend and I went to a Purse/Scarf Sale to benefit a local women's organization, PEO.  We thought if we got there when the doors opened at 9 a.m, we should be in good shape.  Well, let me just tell you, there must have been women camping outside the door all night.  The parking lot was full.  But, not to be dismayed, we went in anyway, and I am so glad we did.
Look at these two beauties I found.
They are like new and not bad at all for $10 each.

Saturday Afternoon
Grandson, Jackson is Red Shirted this year (so far), but we still look forward to watching the Western Michigan Broncos play football on Saturdays.  They aren't doing very well so far, but we still have hopes that Coach P. J. Fleck and his crew will pull them out of this pre-conference losing slump next week when they play Kent State at the WMU Waldo Field.

Saturday Evening
Saturday night was the Opening Night for the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra with special guest artist, Jennifer Koh, Violinist.

Prior to each month's event, a group of us meet for dinner at Monjuni's Italian Restaurant.  This is a special time to look forward to each month during the symphony season.

This outstanding orchestra opened the night with Finlandia by Jean Sibelius.  It was amazing!
You may enjoy listening to this rendition while seeing breathtaking scenes of nature in Finland.

Awaiting the Maestro

 Outstanding programing for the season.

Sunday Morning
Our busy Sunday began with a worship service and lunch at the The Oaks of Louisiana where Dick was invited to speak and sing.  He did a great job as usual.
The Chapel
Dick directed the little choir at this lovely Retirement facility for several years, and may I just say that the folks absolutely love him.
This lovely place offers every amenity for retirees 55 and older .

Sunday Afternoon
We attended the bridal shower for this good-looking couple back in our former home, Bastrop, LA.  Charles is the son of great friends, Rodney and Diana who were only kids when we moved there in 1969.  Diana was Dick's accompanist for several years prior to our leaving and still holds that distinguished position at the First Baptist Church.

It was so good to see many of our dear, dear friends many of whom were hostesses.

Sunday Evening
Afterward, we were invited to have dinner with long-time friends there.  Their beautiful home was so warm and inviting and beautifully decorated.  It could easily be featured in Traditional Home.  And the food!  Oh my goodness, they served the most delicious salad, Seafood Etouffe, and desert.  And as usual the visit was sweet and ended much too soon.

As you can tell, it was a great weekend spent with friends and each other.

The Weekend and Arts

Les Mis
Hubby and I saw this film on Saturday with special friends.  When asked what I thought, the word "Wonderful" was the first to come to mind.  I have seen the stage play (not on Broadway) a couple times and loved the performances.  But, the movie on the BIG screen, was amazing.  The raw emotion and oh my goodness, the music just had me in tears.

Teddy Allen, who writes an article in our Sunday paper wrote this, and I can only say, "Amen!"
"If the music alone doesn't get you, this tale should, this ever-human story of redemption, of injustice, of childhood lost, of misery verses hope and of "nothingness to God."'

Evita

One of the things Hubby and I enjoy most about living in Shreveport is the appreciation for and availability to so many types of "ART" and all that encompasses.  For instance, we look forward to hearing our amazing Shreveport Symphony several times a year, Centenary College's Performing Art's performances, and of course the Little Theater and so many other area venues.

On Sunday afternoon, we saw the StageCenter Theater's production of Evita.  My what amazing local talent we have.

Golden Globes

Okay, what can I say about some of the dresses that showed up on the Red Carpet?  Not much!

Would you have chosen this color for a satin night gown on the carpet?

I am just not at all sure what  Emily Mortimer was thinking when she selected this one. And then, she obviously skipped out on her hair appointment.  From her expression, she regrets both decisions.

Cute Kelly Osbourne had some good things going with her little mint green dress until someone realized there was left-over fabric and made box pleats to tack to the hem of the dress.  What can I say?

Nancy O'Dell looks lovely in this shade of blue, and the dress certainly showcases her gorgeous figure, but the dress itself reminds me of a medieval warriors metal body armor.

Okay, that is enough negativity.  There were some beautiful dresses on the Red Carpet.

Maria Menounos is lovely in this neutral figure-flattering dress.  I think her jewelry and hair are real compliments to the simplicity of the style.

Hayden Panettiere is so cute in this little detailed mermaid.

Anne Hathaway
This is a lovely 2-piece, but I wanted to see a touch more earring.
Love the Les Mis haircut.

Downton Abbey's Michelle Dockery
I like the dress overall, but not sure about those shoulder pads.

Taylor Swift is enchanting in this eggplant dress

Jennifer Lopez
And oh my goodness that body!

Did you have a favorite?
