A Patriotic Hodgepodge

Happy 4th of July!
Thank you Joyce for these thought provoking questions again this week.  As you will see, I got rather long-winded with some of my answers.
I look forward to seeing how others have answered these questions on
1. On Saturday July 4th America celebrates her Independence. (If you're not American,  feel free to answer in terms of a national holiday in your own country) What is your favorite thing about the day? Your favorite food on the 4th? Do you fly a flag at your house? Fireworks-yay or nay? Any special plans this year?

My favorite thing about the 4th is what it actually means and why we have this day set aside to celebrate.  I am grateful for our forefathers and many men and women who have fought to secure our independence as a nation.

Favorite food would have to be watermelon.  Bar-be-Que chicken, baked beans and potato salad would be the precursor.

We have a new flag but haven't gotten the required hanger to mount on the brick.  Should we do what we need to do to get it hung, yes, we will fly a flag at our house.

Our city does a huge firework display on the river; however, we aren't crazy about fighting the multitudes to see it.  Folks in our gated community always go all out as families or individually each year, but this year we will have a joint firework display in the park to culminate a day-long celebration.  We will start the morning with a children's parade and food.  Then later have a pie contest and games until the fireworks begin after dark.

2. What's something you recently got for free?

Is anything free these days?

3.  The Statue of Liberty, The Liberty Bell, The Washington Monument, or Mount Rushmore...how many on the list have you seen? What is your favorite historical American monument, and why?

The only one I haven't seen is Mount Rushmore.  I do feel a sense of urgency to see it before all national monuments are destroyed.  Seriously!  Would you believe the mayor of New Orleans is threatening to take down all the monuments that represent the history of the city?  No joke!  I doubt it will ever happen, but to even consider such a thing is beyond my comprehension.  Political correctness gone a amok!
My favorite is the Lincoln Memorial.

4. When it comes to the news are you more ostrich (stick my head in the sand) or hog (they have room to take a whole lot in)? How much attention have you given the recent news reports regarding ISIS and the acts of terror they've perpetrated against those who do not share their beliefs or support their cause?

I am definitely a hog where the news is concerned.  I can become rather irate involved regarding certain issues.  I'm not fearful for myself, but I am fearful for our nation because of what I see happening in this administration regarding ISIS, Islam, and other such issues.  I am fearful for what this attitude, willful ignorance, and ideology could mean for my children and grandchildren and others like them around the world.  I am fearful for those lives being threatened and slaughtered because of hate and an adherence to a false and evil religion.  I am fearful yet hopeful.

A friend recently loaned me the current issue of the "LampLighter" magazine.
I haven't read it all yet, but one of the lines I read went something like this:
"We live in perilous times, but we need not despair for the Bible clearly proclaims that 'We will win in the end!'  And that will occur when Jesus returns in majesty, power and glory to reign from Mount Zion in Jerusalem.
We are to await His return but in the meantime, we aren't to allow ourselves to be deceived."
5. We're talking plain ice cream...vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry? Choose one.

Vanilla with warm chocolate sauce.  Or, chocolate with or without a warm chocolate sauce.  Either way, make it chocolate.

6. Share a song you love containing the word 'stars' in the lyrics or title?

"How Great Thou Art"
O Lord my God!
When I in awesome wonder consider all the worlds thy hands have made.
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power thro'out the universe displayed.
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to thee:
How great thou art, how great thou art!

7. Describe and/or say goodbye to June with an acrostic.

In line with today's theme:

Expectation

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Leonard Ravenhill

  1. Great answers and your acrostic is the best!!!! I like and read the Lamplighters frequently. David Reagan is from this area and I really like him. Happy 4th.

  3. Good morning! Didn't get to the Hodgepodge this week as I had unexpected company yesterday afternoon, but this looks like a good one! You had such GREAT answers and honestly I agree with every one of them. I don't think I am a hog about news, though hubby is chief hog is there is such a thing so he keeps me informed the way I like to be...knowing what's happening and how it affects us as Christians as well as Americans, without hearing it over and over. Your 4th of july celebration sounds just perfect....enjoy every minute of it!

  4. Your 4th sounds lovely! Things are getting crazy with the Confederacy stuff. It's our history...our heritage. And, it's also crazy that a lot (if not most) of the US citizens think that the Civil War was mainly about slavery.

  5. Libby...your acrostic is spot on! I am in total agreement, too, with your random thought! What in the world has happened to our country? Sad, sad times, for sure!

  7. There is a link going around Facebook by Franklin Graham regarding the rainbow over the White House and he compaires it to the rainbow in Noah's day and how it was God's promise not to destroy the earth again. Great read. If you haven't seen it, you may want to google it. As Christiams, we've got to hold on the promises of God. I was so grieved last week by the decision and so discouraged until I open my Bible this week and also heard from a pastor on the topic. The decision did not take God by surprise. He knew what was going to happen before the decision was made and I know He is in control. I believe He will bring judgement, but I'm praying for a revival instead!

  9. I totally agree with your choice of favorite foods for the Fourth :)
I agree with a lot of other things in your post, today, including your acrostic and random thought. So true!!!

  10. I kept agreeing as I read your answers. I think the rainbow on the White House is an absolute disgrace. The rainbow is a sign of the covenant between God and His people, not pride. Another example of taking something good and turning it to evil. You picked one of my favorite hymns, don't know how I didn't think of that! Happy 4th :)

  11. I just heard that they have decided to take down The Ten Commandments statue in Oklahoma. Very sad! I choose vanilla too. That is an excellent song choice. Happy 4th of July to you and your family.
